SELF-CONTROL – LESSON FOUR
“What lies in our power to do, it also likes in our power not to do.”
~ Aristotle
Self-Control: is the ability to control impulses and reactions, and is another name for self-discipline.
Self-control is vital for overcoming fears, addictions and any kind of unsuitable behavior. It helps to put you in control of your life. It can help improve your relationships with everyone around you, and is an important tool to achieve success and happiness. Developing self-control starts by identifying what areas in your life are lacking in self-control. These could be eating, shopping, completing school work, completing chores. It is important to identify the emotion(s) that lack control such as anger, unhappiness or fear. Next is to identify the thoughts that push you to behave out of control. Once you have done that, the best thing to do is to repeat self-affirmations daily, which could be the following:
I am fully in control of myself.
I have the power to choose my emotions.
I am in control of my reactions.
Ask yourself….
- What is one area you are lacking in self-control that you could improve?
- What emotions or thoughts do you have that make you act with no self-control?
- What self-affirmation can you tell yourself daily to improve and strengthen your self-control?
