SELF-CONTROL – LESSON TWO (It’s a conscious decision.)
“It is in self-limitation that a master first shows himself.”
~ J.W. Von Goethe
Self-Control: is a conscious decision and a choice.
Self-control in the martial arts school is a form of intense concentration and a necessity. It is not letting the outside world inside the walls of the dojo. We must acknowledge that training is training and outside things such as arguments at home and school must be left at the doorway. Self-control is being able to keep these things in check while training in the martial arts school. Self-control is a conscious decision and choice. You must choose to use that self-control on a daily basis. It is very important for you to develop self-control in order to reach your goals in martial arts. Without self-control, you may wander away from the right course of action because you cannot be disciplined. When you have control over your actions, you have control over your life, and you can shape it just how you want to. When you think before you act, you will avoid making mistakes in the process.
Ask yourself:
- When you bow into class, are you acknowledging consciously using self-control and leaving the outside world off the mat?
- Why is it important to learn to separate training and outside life?
- Why is self-control a choice?
